Betfair Seeks Licensing

Leading firms have been striving to gain a foothold and become legal operators in places within the European Union; a case in point is one of the industry’s leading operators of online casinos and other internet gambling sites, Betfair. However, the odds are currently against it. The legal battle that took place in the European Court of Justice has just recently ended with a ruling against the gambling giant. Rulings from the European Court of Justice state that the monopolies will be in a favorable position if public interest and welfare become jeopardized through imposing restrictions on the rights of operators who are licensed to do business in European Union countries. Yet such decisions against Ladbrokes and Betfair, and to uphold the ban on non-licensed sites marketing within Sweden, have not deterred the spirit of companies to continue pursuing the online casino and internet gambling market in Europe.

Among several companies operating online casinos and internet gambling sites, Betfair will re-apply for a license for sports betting in the Netherlands. The gambling giant’s spokesperson said that before pushing through with the plan, they will first wait for the impact of ECJ’s ruling to reach and filter down to local courts. Betfair, Bwin, and PartyGaming—notable and leading online casino and internet gambling companies— are striving to take things slow with their licensure endeavors by targeting one country at a time. Given the climate of the gambling industry in the continent, this seems to be the only feasible move for operators at present.

The competition against monopolies within the European Union has been a fierce battle but online casino and gambling giants persist with their endeavor despite unfavorable circumstances, albeit slowly and cautiously.
