Demark Softens Stance

Denmark’s gambling authority has reconsidered its stance on the placement of the online casino gambling systems for the country’s licensees. It now allows the system outside its borders under the conditions that the authority can strictly supervise the gambling system. According to the amended article, the Danish Gaming Authority (DGA) can allow a piece of any licensee’s system be placed in any region or country not under the mutual agreement as long as the system is operated satisfactorily. This is good news to all companies wishing to operate online casinos off shore.

Kristian Wind, DGA’s Technical Adviser, stated that the line-up of jurisdictions and countries is not yet official. There is a likelihood though that the areas may comprise those nations that are hosts to online casino firms. The DGA are in talks with several national legislators. They have considered several possible situations and decided that it would be wise to allow online casinos to operate in Denmark even if their system is not located in its borders. They must have also considered the lost income if they did not allow these companies to operate in the country. Internet gaming, after all, is one of the fastest growing industries and has the potential to generate hundreds of millions in taxes.

The (EC) recently received two complaints of unfair competition. It was started by the slot machine organization in Denmark and the Royal Casino, a land-based gambling facility, on the suggested tax rate. Online casinos will be taxed 20 percent of their gross winnings, compared to the 41 percent that land-based operators have to pay. At the moment, it is not known the length of time needed by the Commission to deal with the complaints. But DGA is hoping to receive an advice from the EC before March regarding this issue.
