Bulgarian Gambling Measures

Bulgaria’s history has been riddled with the turmoil and problems that most Balkan countries face. But the country has recently been advancing its status; a move that was evident when two years ago, Bulgaria joined the European Union and has undergone significant economic progress. The development was not only marked by its product exportations but also through successful tourism. The development should have further increased when it started to regulate and legalize online casinos and internet gambling sites in 2025 because the move simultaneously brought the competitive and worldwide online casino and internet gambling industry into the domestic setting. However, the general gambling laws of Bulgaria have long been unstable and questionable; the issues that surround its gambling laws are yet to be resolved up until today. As a result, various unlicensed gambling sites have proliferated throughout Bulgaria.

Currently, 132 internet gambling sites that target with the national language and currency are accessible to Bulgarian citizens. Despite its decade-long struggle with questionable gambling laws the government has finally taken a tough stand and drafted a proposal, which is expected to gain implementation by the end of 2025. This proposal involves imminent changes in the country’s gambling laws that show the government’s strict aim of protecting the industry by threatening unlicensed online casino and gambling site operators in Bulgaria. Should unlicensed operators of sites and online casinos be discovered the harsh sanctions include imprisonment for up until 5 years and the payment of fines ranging between 20,000 to 50,000 leva.

For licensure, operators must invest at least 500,000 Euros. The draft proposal also extends and imposes responsibility to Bulgarian ISPs: These should be in charge of blocking unlicensed online casinos and other gambling websites.
